The position you sleep in each night can make a big difference in how you feel during the day.

Hands-down, the best position is to sleep on your back.

Sleeping on your back allows your spine to lie in a neutral position, without adding any extra curves.

Sleeping on your stomach or on your side adds extra forces, curves, and stresses into your spine throughout the night.

Think of sleeping as a form of posture.

Proper posture contributes to proper spinal alignment, whether it is during the day or the night.

Try taking steps towards creating new sleeping habits, especially if you have neck or back pain.

A great first step for those of you who sleep on your side is to keep a small pillow between your knees throughout the night to decrease stress into your hips, pelvis, and spine.

Another great step to take is to check out your pillow. How many do you sleep on? Less is good. One soft, low pillow is better. A cervical pillow that supports the lordotic curve in your neck is best, such as this one: Tri-Core Cervical Pillow.
