Massage Therapy at Summit Chiropractic Center

Massage Therapy Has Arrived!

Thinking about getting a massage?

Now you can at Summit Chiropractic!

(I know, I know. That sounded a tad like a cheesy infomercial…)

But it’s true! We are proud to announce the newest member of our team, in conjunction with Rod Cain Massage Therapy: massage therapist, Dawn Goode.

Massage therapy and chiropractic care are a powerful team. In a nutshell, chiropractic care works toward balancing structural problems within the spine while massage therapy works towards releasing muscular tension and stress within the body.

But that explanation is actually oversimplified!

Although most known as a relaxation technique, massage therapy has also been shown reduce pain, stress, nausea, depression, distress, anxiety, and fatigue. Furthermore, it can improve athletic performance or be used as a tool for general health maintenance.

How cool is that?

You can check out the Rod Cain Massage Therapy website here or if you’d like to schedule a massage with Dawn, you can easily book it here

The position you sleep in each night can make a big difference in how you feel during the day.

“What Position Should I Sleep In?”

Sounds like a simple question, doesn’t it? Just lie down, get comfortable, and fall asleep…right?

Au contraire, mon frere!

The position you sleep in each night can make a big difference in how you feel during the day.

Hands-down, the best position is to sleep on your back.

Sleeping on your back allows your spine to lie in a neutral position, without adding any extra curves.

Sleeping on your stomach or on your side adds extra forces, curves, and stresses into your spine throughout the night.

Think of sleeping as a form of posture.

Proper posture contributes to proper spinal alignment, whether it is during the day or the night.

Try taking steps towards creating new sleeping habits, especially if you have neck or back pain.

A great first step for those of you who sleep on your side is to keep a small pillow between your knees throughout the night to decrease stress into your hips, pelvis, and spine.

Another great step to take is to check out your pillow. How many do you sleep on? Less is good. One soft, low pillow is better. A cervical pillow that supports the lordotic curve in your neck is best, such as this one: Tri-Core Cervical Pillow.

You’ve heard the classic saying that old habits die hard, so try taking it day by day (or…night by night) and aim for falling asleep on your back, with the least amount of pillows that you can handle.

Your spine will thank you for it.

Bonne nuit!

Trouble Breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding…sometimes easier said than done!

The birthing process is amazing, but it can place extreme stresses on a baby’s spine and spinal cord.

These stresses can cause shifting within the infant’s spine, called vertebral subluxations.

If an infant won’t nurse, or will only nurse comfortably on one side, they should be checked for an underlying structural shift of the spine as a possible cause.

What corrects this?

Successful breastfeeding requires that an infant’s entire neuromuscular system is functioning well.

In other words, the mechanics behind breastfeeding need proper input from the nervous system to work correctly.

Check out the results of this fantastic study:

78% of 114 infants with nursing difficulties were able to breastfeed after 2-5 chiropractic adjustments within a 2-week period.

Breastfeeding may not have to be that difficult after all. 🙂

Just Throw Your Sneakers On

Well, it’s back to the races again!

I apologize for the corny opening line… but it seemed right…

Dr. Tilyr and I spent last Sunday at the beautiful Oakledge Park offering free stretching to Zoe’s Race participants, which was held to benefit the Howard Center. You can check out what this great non-profit organization is all about here:

Some of you may ask…why would anyone in their right mind sign up to wake up early on a Sunday morning, throw their sneakers on and walk/run a 1K or 5K with their kids (some still needing to be pushed in strollers…)?!

How heavy is your child’s backpack?

Trivia question…

What time of the year is it when parents are jumping for joy and kids are shaking their heads in sadness at the same time?

Back to school time!

As kids are dragging their feet onto the school bus this week, keep an eye on your child’s backpack. Much like this little cutie in the picture, heavy backpacks can put a lot of stress on a child’s small frame. This extra weight can cause the child to hunch over, putting a lot of pressure on their developing spine, and most major joints in the body. This can lead to subluxations in the spine, causing back pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, as well as other health issues.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic

If you have read the About Us section here, then you may have noticed a word thrown around that you may have never associated with chiropractic before: pregnancy.

Wait what!? Pregnant women can get adjusted?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can be very beneficial for the mom and the baby. One of the most common reasons a pregnant woman may be under chiropractic care is to help decrease low back pain.

Stretching and Inspiration at Vermont race events

Stretching and Inspiration

Have you ever wanted to run a 5K? Half-marathon? How about a triathlon?

Dr. Tilyr and I have spent the summer volunteering to stretch participants at local races around Chittenden County and we always leave incredibly inspired by the competitors. Whether they are 25 or 75 years old, 90 or 250 pounds, have been training their entire life or have never trained before…they all have one admirable trait in common: mental toughness.

Here, at the Colchester Triathlon, hundreds of people gave it their all.

If there is one thing to learn from these competitors, it would be this:
